Columbine

Columbine High School is a public high school located in Littleton, Colorado at 6201 S Pierce St, Littleton, CO 80123. It is part of the Jefferson County Public Schools district.

The school opened in 1973 with a capacity of 1,652 students. There was no senior class in the first year; the first graduating class was in 1975. The school was named after the surrounding community of Columbine, which was named after the Columbine flower. Students from Ken Caryl Junior High School and Bear Creek High School voted for the school colors blue and silver. The school’s sports teams are known as the Rebels.

On April 20, 1999, two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered 12 students and 1 teacher, then committed suicide. In 1999, after the tragic shooting, renovations were done to the corridors, cafeteria, and former library. In the early 2000s, an addition was built to the new HOPE Columbine Memorial Library, as well as a memorial on the site. On January 28, 2000, then-Colorado-governor Bill Owens signed an executive order creating the Columbine Review Commission. There was also a non-fiction book, Columbine, by Dave Cullen, published about the incident on April 6, 2009.

Columbine is home to many notable former students. Austin Eubanks was a motivational speaker on drug addiction and recovery and a survivor of the shooting. Darrel Akerfelds was a Major League Baseball pitcher with the Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, and Philadelphia Phillies from 1986 through 1991. Sera Cahoone is a singer-songwriter. Skip Ewing is a country songwriter and artist. Wes Hart last played for the Major League Soccer team, the San Jose Earthquakes, in 2005. Allan Kayser played “Bubba” on the sitcom Mama’s Family. Woody Kincaid is an American long-distance runner for the Bowerman Track Club.

In June 2019, the superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools proposed tearing down the school and rebuilding it to lessen the “morbid fascination” with the 1999 event.
