These are the steps that you need to follow in order to make a good lawn measurement:

1. Gather the supplies you need to measure your lawn: a tape measure, a piece of paper, and a pencil. 
2. Draw the areas to be sodded on a piece of paper. These should be drawn into measurable shapes like squares, rectangles, right triangles, and circles (including half or quarter circles), depending on the shape and curve of your yard.  
3. Use the tape measure to measure each area, recording the measurements on the drawing. For squares, rectangles, and right triangles, measure the length and width. For circles, measure the radius: a straight line from the center of the circle to the outside of the circle. 
4. Double-check your measurements. This is important because sod is perishable, and you don’t want to order too much. In fact, it’s much better to run out.   
5. Enter each dimension into our sod area calculator to get the total square footage.

Helpful hint: Use objects or marking paint to mark where you already measured since you’ll need to move the tape measure multiple times. You can buy marking paint at most hardware stores.
