Bunker Sodding

We like to use big roll sod on bunkers. This allows us to install larger, heavier pieces of sod that are less prone to sliding when properly installed. On steep slopes, big roll sod is pulled out from the top of the bunker to the bottom. This gives us a flat area at the top of the bunker to pin the sod to and hold it in place. We also pin the entire piece of sod down the slope using wooden sod pins. They biodegrade and will not damage mowing equipment. If the slope is gentler, we install the big roll sod horizontally along the bunker lip. Thus, pinning the top so the bunker edge is one continuous piece of sod.

Our RTF tall fescue sod is becoming increasingly popular for bunker renovation projects. RTF is being selected for increased drought tolerance, reduced thatch production, and distinct appearance.

Big roll RTF® Water saver sod is installed on a bunker at Valley Country Club in Colorado.
